Technology is not so important… until it fails

I have a few days without blogging, partly because I have been busy solving a technical problem with some e-learning modules developed for a client.

Everything worked properly for 3 weeks until suddenly stopped working. We tested, thorough, with different browsers. All unsuccessful. Then we turn to see if it was a problem of e-learning platform, as we were told from some sources. Wrong. Finally, our tool supplier managed isolated the problem. Several tens of hours later and a couple of weeks of brooding.

The technology becomes increasingly complex, and when we have Internet e-learning platform that interacts with the SCORM code, the player with the tool, it in turn to the Flash player and this in turn with content, have a good chance that any of the links fail and cause a general failure.

Luckily we were in the pilot phase, only the company’s internal users. The charge has been patient enough and gave us time to work and solve the problem. And working together we have it solved.

The conclusions we have drawn from this event are:

  1. Do not underestimate the technology. Today it is almost a commodity, but if it does not work we can ruin any project on the Internet.
  2. Testing, inspecting, checking, as much as necessary.
  3. Find expert support when our skills are not enough.
