Starting from scratch, a big problem (for somebody)
A few days ago I had a conversation with an employee of a client who told me: “Please send me the starting material of the course.” My question was: “Which starting material?”.
There is always a starting material, obviously, but in this case we can say without shyness that we have put us the creativity. Indeed we have used the product catalogs, but not beyond the messages of the second or third page. Therefore, we had to go to seek knowledge wherever it was.
We started with clear objectives from the client. It was in this case to teach installers to sell the products, so first we went to interview a sales manager. We prepared a series of questions, but the bottom line was: how is the sales process for an installer of your products since customer contact to closing the transaction. It allowed us to record the audio interview, which had no problem in retrieving the information later.
We have thus been able to build a series of stories called scenarios that might call “a day in the life of …”. And those scenarios will show the student a series of situations where they have to make decisions (and learn from their successes and failures).
As part of the training needed to teach how to use a computer program to make offers to customers. For the second time we find ourselves without good documentation, so we had to go find an expert. In this case the record was even richer, as well as audio could record a sequence of screens. Structured properly tested and could become a new screencast and a series of exercises for the student.
The work has been enormously time-consuming, but also very grateful, and has allowed us to use our creativity. Of course there are a number of people who have criticized (positively) the work done and who have made a number of interesting suggestions for improvement. We received them with great interest, since they enrich the result, no doubt.
